Cillian Murphy steps far away from his usual charming persona to deliver a deeply grounded performance as a compassionate principal in charge of a reform college for troubled youth. Set in the 1990s, the film captures the grit and emotional strain of dealing with society’s neglected young people battling mental health issues and lives already on the edge.
Murphy’s portrayal feels honest and layered, reflecting the weight of a man burdened not only by his students’ struggles but also by his own past trauma. The narrative does feel rushed towards the end — it could easily have been twice as long but despite that, it remains a gripping and heartfelt piece of work. Teachers and educators, especially, will find its portrayal of care and frustration strikingly familiar. A commendable effort that quietly stays with you.
